Opinion: It should go without saying. Don’t auction off pristine public land in Grand Teton National Park.

There’s a 640-acre parcel of magnificent, state-owned public land in Wyoming that’s set for auction unless the state changes its mind.Simply put, this small inholding, known as the “Kelly Parcel,” should never be privatized — never. It is one of the most awe-inspiring and important pieces of open space remaining in America.Within Grand Teton National Park, its borders include the National Elk Refuge and Bridger-Teton National Forest. Its value was appraised in 2022 at $62.4 million. However, the director of the Office of State Lands and Investment just recommended a starting bid of $80 million. But its real value isn’t about money: The land is a vital migration corridor for elk, moose, big horn sheep antelope, pronghorn and mule deer travelling into and out of the national park. It also hosts 87 other “Species of Greatest Conservation Need.”And the annual, 200-mile-long migration corridor known as the Path of the Pronghorn — from Grand Teton National Park to the upper Gre...Kiszla vs. Gabriel: Is Javonte Williams the best starter at running back for the Broncos?

Kiz: With the Broncos now facing a steep climb to make the NFL playoffs, is running back Javonte Williams the correct running back to lead the push? For all the offensive genius of coach Sean Payton, this team’s 21.9 points per game is no better than middle of the pack. Ball control is good. Three-and-out is bad. Should Denver consider a more dynamic back than Williams to be RB1? Please, tell me where I’m wrong.Gabriel: I think he is, Kiz. But let’s not confuse that with the conversation about needing to get more dynamic. The question at this point is about where that’s going to come from down the stretch. Samaje Perine’s done good work in his role, and we’ve seen the tantalizing ability of rookie Jaleel McLaughlin. But I’m skeptical that the Broncos run game or, just as important, offense overall would be much more efficient if one of them were getting 15 carries per game and Williams had his role cut.Kiz: We all respect the work ethic and toughness Williams has display...Our jazz columnist reveals his favorite releases from 2023

As 2023 winds down, I gaze in awe upon a particularly robust stack of jazz- and improv-oriented releases. It would be easier to compile a list of my 30 or 40 favorites, but there’s only so much space. It’s worth mentioning that most of what I found exciting was released on independent labels, and it hasn’t always been that way. While Blue Note, Impulse! and others attached to the big corporations are still releasing creative music, it’s the scrappy little guys who will truly fill your mind with the joy of discovery. By Joshua Goodman and Eric Tucker | Associated PressMIAMI — A former American diplomat who served as U.S. ambassador to Bolivia has been charged with serving as a secret agent for Cuba’s intelligence services dating back decades, the Justice Department said Monday.Newly unsealed court papers allege that Manuel Rocha engaged in “clandestine activity” on Cuba’s behalf since at least 1981, including by meeting with Cuban intelligence operatives and providing false information to U.S. government officials about his travels and contacts. The complaint, filed in federal court in Miami, charges Rocha with crimes including acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government and provides a vivid case study in what American officials say are long-standing efforts by Cuba and its notoriously sophisticated intelligence services to target government officials who can be flipped. The 73-year-old Rocha, who was arrested at his Miami home Friday, was due in court later Monday a...Latest news
