Gabby Giffords: 11 years after the Aurora theater shooting, Colorado finally responds to one grieving family

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:50:38 GMT

Since I was shot in 2011, I’ve dedicated my life to the fight to end gun violence. It’s a difficult road — one full of tragedy, heartbreak, and setbacks. But there are also victories that are equally important to recognize, reflect on, and learn from. The state of Colorado has been home to far too many mass shootings: Columbine in 1999, the Aurora theater shooting in 2012, the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting in 2019, the Boulder King Soopers shooting in 2021, and the Club Q shooting in Colorado Springs in 2022 all come to mind. But the toll of gun violence stretches far beyond mass shootings, encompassing community violence, firearm suicide, domestic violence, and unintentional shootings.Perhaps in part because Coloradans understand the pain of gun violence firsthand, the state has become a leader in gun safety legislation. In 2013, Colorado passed a universal background check law, closing dangerous loopholes that allow individuals to obtain guns through private sales and ...

Interactive map shows which Southern California cities could be underwater in 2050

Residents of the northeastern U.S. saw firsthand this summer the devastation flooding can cause in a community. Unfortunately, scientists predict flooding will only become more common as the years go on. A map created by Climate Central, an organization of scientists and journalists focused on studying the impacts of climate change, shows what the future may hold for coastal communities as sea level rises. In the first map (below), we set the projections to include sea level rise and typical annual flooding (weather that can be expected every year). We set the map to include what would happen with "unchecked pollution" between now and 2050. That setting most closely matches the current path we're on, Climate Central said. Earth gets hotter, deadlier despite decades of global climate talks For luck, we set the bar to "medium," which reflects the middle range of possibilities predicted by scientists. Explore the interactive map below to zoom in on impacts around the country. You can...

By WENDY FRY | CalMattersCalifornia’s electric bills — already some of the highest in the nation — are rising, but regulators are debating a new plan to charge customers based on their income level.Typically what you pay for electricity depends on how much you use. But the state’s three largest electric utilities — Southern California Edison Company, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and San Diego Gas & Electric Company — have proposed a plan to charge customers not just for how much energy they use, but also based on their household income. Their proposal is one of several state regulators received designed to accommodate a new law to make energy less costly for California’s lowest-income customers. Some state Republican lawmakers are warning the changes could produce unintended results, such as weakening incentives to conserve electricity or raising costs for customers using solar energy. But the utility companies say the measure would reduce electricity bills for the lowest inco...
